Assisting with Aches and Pains in Older Dogs

Older dogs are more common today than ever before due to better vaccines, better nutrition, and better health care; however, despite these advantages, older dogs have specific needs that must be met to insure continued health. As a dog ages he begins to experience hearing, vision, and dental problems.

He may undergo behavioral changes associated with arthritis and cognitive dysfunction. He may experience periods of disorientation, have accidents, and lose his tolerance. He may become less active and lose muscle and his organs could begin to fail. Although we can’t prevent these maladies all together, we can be ready for them and address the issues as they come.

Everybody would rather see a fat dog rather than a skinny one, unfortunately fat is unhealthy. The best thing you can do for your older dog is to watch his diet. If your pet has a tendency to be overweight, weight loss will be difficult, but you should continue trying. Make sure he’s eating a low calorie, low protein and high fiber diet.

What Other Types of Things Happen to Older Dogs? While some people struggle with obesity in their elderly pets others struggle with the opposite. Many older dogs have trouble holding weight. Dental problems often make eating painful; changing to a softer food such as canned food or softening the food with broth helps tremendously.

Older dogs can experience trouble with their vision, along with their hearing. In this way, they can be quite similar to humans as they get older. It’s always a good idea to bring your dog to a vet every year so these items can be watched and monitored.

Also, an older dog who has become less active will have often developed arthritis. This can make it very painful to run as they once did. This can make it tough to do something as basic as going to the bathroom. Because of this, it is vital that you are patient and kind, in order to help them as it isn’ their fault. Your beloved dog is simply getting older as we all must. [Read more...]

great time for kids to have some fun

My parents aren’t really a fan of Halloween. That’s the reason me and my siblings haven’t experienced having indoor halloween decorations in our home. But, their mind set changed now that they are old. They wanted my younger siblings, especially the youngest who is in primary school, to have great memories of the Halloween. This, I want to throw my support because I feel it’s a great time for kids to have some fun.

Well, brother is pretty excited about it. He asked if he could start inviting his friends and classmates to come along. I told him to wait until I could finalize everything besides it also needs some preparations. Since this is the first time he will celebrate Halloween, I want to make sure it’s really scary and fun. That’s why I need to find some really creepy decorations to make it more interesting and exciting. Lucky for me I still have some ample time to do some scouting.

little way to avoid me nagging

No matter how often I tell my fourth sibling not to use the battery in our remote control for his gaming activity, he never listens. It’s just too irritating to watch television and being surprised that the remote isn’t working, which I change battery two days ago. I’m actually getting tired of it. If I continue to be bothered by it, I will just end up hurting myself.

Oh well, I guess I can do little about him. In order to avoid me nagging, which increases my blood pressure, I will just stock up on batteries. But, hubby said it’s better to buy rechargeable batteries for him. Doing so will eliminate huge number of used battery cell. While checking for great battery deal in the web, I came across a huge selection of everything from battery chargers to battery packs and testers. Plus, I also find rechargeable digital camera batteries, camcorder batteries, laptop batteries, netbook batteries, cell phone batteries, telephone batteries, PSP batteries, makita batteries, calculators, watches and more – all at great prices. I’m impressed with the number of batteries I’m seeing. I’d better call my second sibling to inform about the laptop battery because he’s in need of one too.

Vitamin A Deficiency can Cause Blindness

World Health Organization said that vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness among children and is considered a public health concern in more than half of all countries. While vitamin A deficiency can occur as a result of underlying medical conditions, it usually develops from inadequate dietary intake of the vitamin.

If you do not have enough vitamin A in your body, the light-sensitive proteins in your eye lack the vitamin A necessary to create visual images. A vitamin A deficiency initially manifests as night blindness, which is defined as difficulty seeing after dusk. Night blindness is due to an inability to regenerate rhodopsin, which prevents the eyes from adjusting from daylight to darkness.

Vitamin A deficiency, if untreated, can lead to a condition called xerophthalmia, which is characterized by severe dryness and damage to the cornea. Severe xerophthalmia can lead to blindness. “Nutrition and You” by Joan Salge Blake notes that up to 10 million children suffer from xerophthalmia annually and 500,000 of them go blind.

Meeting your needs for vitamin A is the only way to prevent a vitamin A deficiency. It is recommended that infants between the ages of 0 and 6 months receive 400 mcg per day, whereas infants from 6 to 12 months need 500 mcg daily. [Read more...]

preparing myself

I’m actually excited and nervous at the same time over our trip this September. It’s going to be a new experience and challenge to us. But, I’m sure we will be able to adjust accordingly. It’s a new place and new culture, which makes it more exciting.

Hubby said that his brothers and their roomies love to go outdoors every other month. It’s their way to unwind after hard days of work. I love the outdoors, but I’ve never slept outside a structure before. Mom and dad used to be very protective towards their children; that’s why I never experience sleeping outdoors. Oh well, I guess I should prepare myself. Hubby shouldn’t know that I am already looking at the Sierra designs sleeping bags. He might think that I am indeed too excited. Well, it doesn’t show that much because I’m trying to keep it low.

thought of sending gift for no reason

According to mom, dad has been feeling lonely for two days already. She isn’t aware of the reason behind it because he’s not saying it. All we can do is to speculate and rationalize. But, it’s really sad to know one of your family member isn’t feeling well, right? I wanted to give him happiness, yet it’s too difficult because I’m miles away from him. And, it is impractical to flight back home because there’s only three weeks left before our flight abroad.

I thought why not just send a gift for no reason? Though it’s not his birthday or any special event, I guess giving him something will lift his mood. I’m sure it doesn’t need an occasion to make someone feel important and remembered. For sure, if it is dad he will love everything given by his kids; whatever it is it will be fine. But, I will make sure I will give him something special.

Tips for Buying Patio Umbrellas

My patio area is quite exposed so if the sun is out then it’s really easy for my guests to get burned and because many of them have young families I decided it was time to invest in a patio umbrella. It doesn’t matter what I’m buying, I always like to thoroughly research it and why not share my findings with you? So here are the salient points that I took into consideration before buying.

  • Frame - basically the choice is wood or aluminium. The disadvantage of wood is that it’s heavy but if portability is not a big thing for you then wood really does look the part. Aluminum is lighter and therefore more portable.
  • Lift - dependent on the size of the patio umbrella the lifting mechanism may be important to you. For a heavy umbrella the best is a crank system which means there is a level on the umbrella pole that you wind and up it goes. Less elaborate systems include a pulley where you pull on a rope and when the umbrella is up; secure its position with a pin. Finally there’s the tried and tested collar that you simply push up until it clicks into a lock.
  • Tilt - the tilt will help you maximize the amount of shade that your patio umbrella delivers so keeping you out of the harmful UV rays of the sun and there are three options: a) The auto system uses the crank to gently tilt the umbrella b) The push button is exactly that and release the button when the desired angle is reached c) Tilt by rotating one of the ribs.
  • Shade Size - you would expect the quoted size of a patio umbrella to be measure across the diameter but this is not the case, most manufacturers measure the size from one end, over the top and down to the other end. So take care when considering what size you need. [Read more...]
