Tea Can Cause Kidney Stones?

Mostly, when minerals collect in the filtering portions of your kidneys, they can form hard masses known as kidney stones. Kidney stones are a painful condition that can cause pain and discomfort until the stone passes through your urinary tract. If you are prone to experiencing kidney stones, you may wish to eat a diet that reduces the likelihood kidney stones will form. One dietary change you can make is to drink less tea.

One of the reasons why tea could cause kidney stones is because tea is high in oxalates, containing more than 10mg of oxalates per 1/2 cup serving. These compounds are commonly found in a number of foods, including chocolate, spinach, beets, nuts and wheat bran. When you eat a diet high in oxalates, calcium in your diet can bind with oxalate in your intestines, which prevents calcium from being absorbed in your bones. As a result, your kidneys excrete more oxalates. When the oxalates reach the kidneys and bind with calcium, they can create calcium oxalate kidney stones, which are one of the most common kidney stone types.

Many teas are naturally caffeinated, which can make you feel alert, but also may be problematic because caffeine is a natural diuretic. Drinking more than one to two cups of coffee per day can have a diuretic effect, making you lose water too quickly. While you need to drink more water to dilute the minerals in your urinary tract and prevent kidney stones, drinking too much tea can cause you to lose fluids more quickly than can be beneficial to your kidneys. Vitamin A Deficiency can Cause Blindness

World Health Organization said that vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness among children and is considered a public health concern in more than half of all countries. While vitamin A deficiency can occur as a result of underlying medical conditions, it usually develops from inadequate dietary intake of the vitamin.

If you do not have enough vitamin A in your body, the light-sensitive proteins in your eye lack the vitamin A necessary to create visual images. A vitamin A deficiency initially manifests as night blindness, which is defined as difficulty seeing after dusk. Night blindness is due to an inability to regenerate rhodopsin, which prevents the eyes from adjusting from daylight to darkness.

Vitamin A deficiency, if untreated, can lead to a condition called xerophthalmia, which is characterized by severe dryness and damage to the cornea. Severe xerophthalmia can lead to blindness. “Nutrition and You” by Joan Salge Blake notes that up to 10 million children suffer from xerophthalmia annually and 500,000 of them go blind.

Meeting your needs for vitamin A is the only way to prevent a vitamin A deficiency. It is recommended that infants between the ages of 0 and 6 months receive 400 mcg per day, whereas infants from 6 to 12 months need 500 mcg daily. [Read more...]

Tips for Buying Patio Umbrellas

My patio area is quite exposed so if the sun is out then it’s really easy for my guests to get burned and because many of them have young families I decided it was time to invest in a patio umbrella. It doesn’t matter what I’m buying, I always like to thoroughly research it and why not share my findings with you? So here are the salient points that I took into consideration before buying.

  • Frame - basically the choice is wood or aluminium. The disadvantage of wood is that it’s heavy but if portability is not a big thing for you then wood really does look the part. Aluminum is lighter and therefore more portable.
  • Lift - dependent on the size of the patio umbrella the lifting mechanism may be important to you. For a heavy umbrella the best is a crank system which means there is a level on the umbrella pole that you wind and up it goes. Less elaborate systems include a pulley where you pull on a rope and when the umbrella is up; secure its position with a pin. Finally there’s the tried and tested collar that you simply push up until it clicks into a lock.
  • Tilt - the tilt will help you maximize the amount of shade that your patio umbrella delivers so keeping you out of the harmful UV rays of the sun and there are three options: a) The auto system uses the crank to gently tilt the umbrella b) The push button is exactly that and release the button when the desired angle is reached c) Tilt by rotating one of the ribs.
  • Shade Size - you would expect the quoted size of a patio umbrella to be measure across the diameter but this is not the case, most manufacturers measure the size from one end, over the top and down to the other end. So take care when considering what size you need. [Read more...]

Feet Movement Signaled Attraction, study finds

Numerous studies so far have attempted to prove how one can tell when a person is lying, when they’re interested in something or someone else, or when they are trying only to appear so. It could very well be that all of them were looking in the wrong place. Researcher spent years analyzing human behavior and a lot of time looking into research on how people can give themselves away by feet movement. The idea behind the most recent study, while it can become extremely easy to control one’s facial expression, smiles, eyes and hand movement, most of the time we’re not even aware what we’re doing with our feet.

And this is precisely why they can tell our interlocutor plenty of things about us, including whether we’re attracted to them, interested in what they’re saying or even lying to them. For instance, the survey reveals, if a woman is attracted to her male interlocutor, her foot will move away from the rest of her body. Oppositely, if her legs are crossed or her feet are tucked away under her body, she’s not interested in the man she’s speaking to. Men, on the other hand, do not make this kind of distinction as far as “feet language” goes, the survey also shows.

Looking at the movement of the feet can also be very helpful when trying to figure out whether someone is lying. With lying, people always get the signals systematically wrong. Everyone looks at the eyes and the face, but people are very good at inhibiting what they are doing, when actually the most reliable indication of lying is the suppression of foot movement. How to Get Rid of those Aging Facial Jowls

One of the bothersome early signs of facial aging is the onset of jowling. The jowl, once proud tissue of the side of the face, falls to hang along or below the jawline. The beautiful smooth jawline of youth has given way to jowls of the aging face. Time, gravity, and use have weakened the attachments of the skin to the underlying muscle as it sags over the unchanging structure of the underlying bone and muscle.

Patients are really bothered by the development of jowling, particularly younger ages who see it as the reality that aging is occurring. There are numerous options to treat the jowls, both surgical and non-surgical, with varying degrees of effectiveness. The most effective methods, to no surprise, are surgical and include facelifts and liposuction. A full facelift is best viewed as a jowl-neck lift. In its more limited form, it is primarily a jowl lift. It works by pulling skin and deeper tissues up and back, eliminating the jowls by pulling loose tissue above the jawline again. Repositioning of the jowl tissue occurs, but it is not removed just redistributed to a higher location.

More minor procedures that have recently gained popularity, which aims to do the same thing, are the Thread lifts or Feather lifts. In this simple procedure, barned sutures are passed deep into the cheek and facial tissue above the jowl area and cinched up from above. For very minor degress of jowling, this has some benefit but is not effective enough with large amounts of jowling and the long-term results with these procedures is suspect. Actually removing jowl fat can be done with liposuction, reducing their size. This can be done alone or in conjunction with some form of a facelift. When performed alone, liposuction of the jowls must be done very carefully and conservatively, lest you get irregularities that are apparent in the overlying skin. When done with a facelift, the lifting and tightening of the skin usually eliminates this concern. [Read more...]

Fat around Tummy, good or bad?

Mostly, fat around your mid-section is not uncommon if you are overweight, but you may also be prone to excess fat near your belly button due to genetic factors, sex and age. Perimenopausal and menopausal women especially tend to experience weight gain in the abdomen, but men and women of all ages may experience this problem. The key to losing excess fat from your mid-section is a combination of diet and consistent exercise.

The danger of abdominal fat is not limited to chronic disease and health complications associated with higher levels of subcutaneous fat. Often, a dangerous type of fat, visceral fat, hides behind the abdominal subcutaneous layer of fat. This form of fat surrounds vital body organs and produces hormones that interfere with insulin resistance and raises levels of bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Fortunately, visceral fat, along with subcutaneous abdominal fat, may be combated with a healthy diet, aerobic exercise and abdominal strength training.

Aerobic exercise helps burn excess calories to further reduce your amount of abdominal fat. This type of exercise boosts your metabolism so you can burn more calories while you are at rest. Aerobic activities, such as walking, jogging, running, bicycling, swimming, tennis and racquetball, should be performed for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. The more vigorous the activity, the more calories will be burned. As you physically progress, add more time and intensity to your aerobic workouts for maximum fat burning. [Read more...]
