During Cold Season Avoid Touching your Face

In the meantime the cold and flu season is still here, and will continue to be for yet another while, its best we do everything we can to make sure we don’t come down with something as well. Other than dressing appropriately and making sure we get the recommended dose of daily vitamins, doctors also tell us we should not touch our face too often if we don’t want to risk catching something.

For instance, we should definitely restrain ourselves from touching our face when we’re in public places, like the bus, a cab, the gym, or at work. Of course, it’s impossible to stay germ-free all day long, health experts say, but the least we can do is make sure we don’t make physical contact with objects that others have also touched, and then rub our hands all over our face or, even worse, our mouth.

In order to do that, we must constantly check ourselves to not rest the head on our palm when staring at the computer screen, for example, absently rub a part of our face while engaged in some other activity at work or, for women, apply lipstick or gloss with the finger. Similarly, we’re not to put objects into our mouth (pencil or pen), especially if they’ve been on a desk that others have touched as well – this goes especially for those who do this compulsively.

Dry Skin, Fine Lines & Wrinkles Solutions

Epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin. It contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the uppermost layers of the dermis. Skin is the largest organ in our body and one of the organs of elimination. Some serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can arise for people with type 2 diabetes. Dry skin when exposed to the elements, especially in winter, causes it to become drier and fine lines and wrinkles have a good chance to get a hold on your skin. And forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is.

Nutritional deficiencies, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamin group can also contribute to dry skin and wrinkles or result in a chronic dry skin condition that’s not relieved by anything else. Dry skin happens more often in the winter when the cold air outside and heated air inside cause low humidity. If you break out on the skin around your eyes, it could be the shellac in your mascara. Then, if you break out around you mouth and nose it could be from your make-up lip liner or lipstick. Both these break-outs become severely dry. It’s less common knowledge but these breakouts can be from pesticides in your food that have brushed against your face. These skin conditions are actually contact dermatitis and become very dry.

The two most common problems that affect our skin are: not drinking enough water and not eating enough fiber. Eat at least one avocado every day; put it in your salad or mash it up and eat it with a spoon. When the skin is dry and dehydrated, dead skin cells remain on the skin which may block pores and promote acne, zits, blemishes, or other breakouts and cause fine lines and wrinkles to set in. Drink plenty of pure water. [Read more...]

What are the causes of Acne?

There are different types of acne. The most common acne is the type that develops during the teen years. Puberty causes hormone levels to rise, especially testosterone. High hormones cause signal skin glands to start making more oil. Oil releases from the pores to protect the skin and keep it moist. Acne begins when oil mixes with dead cells and clogs the skin’s pores. Bacteria can grow in this mixture. And if this mixture leaks into nearby tissues, it causes swelling, redness, and pus. A common name for these raised bumps is pimples.

Certain medicines can cause acne to develop. This type of acne usually clears up when you stop taking the medicine.

It isn’t just teens who are affected by acne. Sometimes newborns have acne because their mothers pass hormones to them just before delivery. Acne can also appear when the stress of birth causes the baby’s body to release hormones on its own. Young children and older adults also may get acne.

A few conditions of the endocrine system, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing’s syndrome, can lead to outbreaks of acne.

cleansers for acne treatment

Acne is a common skin condition affecting adolescents and sometimes adults too. Acne is caused due to the blockage of skin oil pores (sebum glands) which causes inflammation in the skin. This inflammation gets readily infected by bacteria present in the skin. There are many ways to treat acne. Most acne cleansers are available over the counter.

Acne cleansers are products for facial care that remove dead cells, remove oil, dust, dirt, pollutants and open up pores in the skin. They are usually used twice or thrice daily and generally in conjunction with skin toners and moisturizers. Acne cleansers are to be used with luke warm water. Acne cleansers generally contain either of the mentioned ingredients:

Antibacterials like Benzoyl peroxide, Triclosan and Chlorhexidine gluconate which work by killing the bacteria present in acne. Benzoyl peroxide is the most popular acne cleanser ingredient. Moisturizers are used with benzoyl peroxide to prevent drying of skin.

Skin exfoliants like Salicylic acid, Glycolic acid and other mild acids which act by peeling skin on a micro level to open the pores. Skin exfoliants prevent build up of dead skin on the skin which combines with skin oil to block the pores. Skin exfoliants also clear the follicle ducts in already blocked up pores. They are usually used to treat mild to moderate acne. [Read more...]

Skin Protection Guide from the Sun

Particularly solar radiation and ultraviolet (UV) light is increasing worldwide with the thinning of the protective ozone layer. Over 90% of ultraviolet radiation is UVA, which is most intense in early morning and afternoon, can pass through window glass, penetrates into the dermis, and causes tanning and wrinkling. UVB is most pronounced midday, does not penetrate window glass, and is associated with sunburn. Ultraviolet light has been implicated in multiple human diseases from skin cancer to cataracts to immune suppression.

Protection from the sun’s harmful rays is just a wash away? For runners, people who work outdoors and others who are frequently outdoors, Dr. Chon recommends investing in clothing with built-in UVA blockers to provide an extra layer of protection. Many outdoor and sports clothing brands sell lightweight trendy gear that offer up to 50+ UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Another good option is to wash clothes in a specialty detergent that boosts the UPF of your everyday clothes for up to 20 washes. Dr. Chon notes this great for parents who find it hard to keep constant tabs on their child’s sunscreen habits during long summer days, and can be particularly useful when preparing for summer day and overnight camps.
