To effectively function as a leader, one must have the knowledge and skills that give them confidence and edge. This holds true in every aspect of organizations including the field of law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire services, disaster response or communication. Being a leader in this field is very tricky and daunting. One wrong move and it stripped someone out of the office.
There are a lot of chief of police and public safety figures that were removed from their ranks because of a wrong decision. Some of those cases were due to ineffective management of their people. That being said, there are preemptive measures to avoid getting into this sad situation. What could that be? That is through continually studying.
Being a leader requires a lot. It requires creative thinking and innovative problem solving and good decision making skills to effectively and efficiently manage the many complex challenges in the rapidly expanding sector of public safety. Some of these are gained through experience, while others through programs like taking up masters in public safety administration.
The Master of Science in Public Safety Administration combines knowledge from many different academic disciplines and builds it into a comprehensive leadership curriculum. This program enables professional in this field to lead with confidence, communicate with authority, and inspire hope in times of crisis. It expands their ability to analyze the complexities of public safety challenges and to meet those challenges with deeper understanding.
Of course, a leader must find ways to become better or even excellent in his field. In my opinion, getting masters degree would not hurt. But, that is all up to them if they really want to hone their skills or just stay the way they are.
